Hyperpigmentation: causes and treatment

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

Hyperpigmentation appears when an excess of melanin occurs in the skin, which is what gives rise to spots on the skin. It can have various origins, both endogenous (genetic, hormonal, senile, post-inflammatory, metabolic, vascular, etc.) and exogenous (exposure to UV rays, pollution or other external aggressions, taking medications or medical-aesthetic treatments). Types of hyperpigmentation
Melancholy. There is a normal number of melanocytes and increased pigment of the melanocytes. Some stethopathies:
Ephelides (freckles). In most cases they are of genetic origin and typically appear on the most sun-exposed parts of the body of phototypes I and II. It increases melanin, although melanocytes are normal.
Solar lentigo. They are hyperpigmentations with a round and flat shape, very small and of shade between yellowish and dark brown, reaching black. They are produced by an excess of production in the synthesis of melanin. They are located in areas exposed to the sun. They are stimulated by UV radiation.
Melasma. An increase in melanin occurs as it increases the number of melanocytes. It is usually located in the forehead-nose, cheeks, nose and lower jaw. It is usually due to a hormonal factor such as pregnancy (second month), estrogens and progestogens, ovarian dysfunction and thyroid dysfunction, along with solar radiation. Melasma is aggravated by sun exposure.

Melanocytic. When there is an increase in the number of melanocytes. For example:
Senile lentigo. They are small dark yellow spots that tend to brown, appear in large numbers from an adult age, and specifically on hands and wrists.

Non-melanocytic. It is due to very different causes such as tattoos, drugs (minocycline), metals (silver salts), etc. It is caused by a reaction of the skin with solar radiation (especially UVA rays) when it comes into contact with areas of the skin exposed to these substances.
Post-inflammatory hyperchromias. Acute or chronic inflammation then occurs and are, for example: eczema, acne and skin trauma of various origins.
Endogenous imperfections of vascular origin:couperose, rosacea, dilated capillaries or congestive complexion, etc.
Tranexamic acid, an excellent active ingredient against hyperpigmentation One of the most novel and multifunctional actives on the market in the field of stethopathies related to skin spots of various origins is tranexamic acid. It is a hemostatic a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine that intervenes in the process of production of melanin and also in the release of the vascular and inflammatory component of the skin spots. How tranexamic acid works Tranexamic acid has several effects that influence the process of stain formation. On the one hand, it decreases the activity of tyrosinase,an enzyme on which the process of melanin synthesis depends. It also inhibits plasmin and plasminogen binding to keratinocytes. These two actions are what allow the elimination and prevention of hyperpigmentations such as melasma, senile spots, freckles, etc. Finally, it inhibits vascular factors by reducing the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelin-1 (ET-1), which results in an action on blood vessel cells. With this action it reduces the excessive vascularization characteristic of some hyperpigmentations: couperose, rosacea, dilated capillaries or congestive complexion, etc. Tranexamic Acid from Institute BCN, an effective treatment against hyperpigmentation We have seen the mechanisms of action of tranexamic acid in the body. Let's see now what results these actions translate into thanks to the treatment of hyperpigmented skin with Tranexamic Acid from Institute BCN.
For its depigmenting effect:
Removal of dark skin spots, such as senile spots, lentigines, melasma, contraceptive stains, corticosteroids, spots from sun exposure or pollution, etc.
Correction of photoaging.
Prevention of the appearance of hyperpigmentations such as melasma.
Reduction of darkness in the area of brown dark circles.
Removal of blemishes resulting from inflammation and other lesions, such as acne.

For its vasoconstrictor effect:
Reduces the reddish tone of blood vessels: corrects and prevents rosacea and couperose.

In addition:
It unifies the skin tone to make it more homogeneous.
Lightens the skin with some form of hyperpigmentation.
Brightens the complexion.

In summary, Institute BCN's Tranexamic Acid helps reduce and prevent the appearance of hyperpigmentation and improves the appearance of both resistant dark spots and translucent reddish spots of superficial blood vessels. The result of its application can be observed, therefore, in multiple stethopathies, from melasma, solar lentigines or senile hyperkeratosis to rosacea, through postacne marks or those derived from some aesthetic treatments. In all cases, Tranexamic Acid of Institute BCN achieves a unique depigmenting, bleaching and nuancing effect that returns uniformity and luminosity to the skin, making it currently one of the references among the lighteners of skin with spots.
