Acne is a skin disorder which involves the pilosebaceous units and is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pimples), pustules (spots containing pus) and sometimes even nodules and cysts (deep spots), which appear mainly on the face and upper part of the trunk, although they are also localized in glutes and thighs. Acne occurs as a result of several factors: an alteration in the keratinisation of the hair follicle, an overproduction of sebum and the bacterial overgrowth of a micro-organism called propionibacterium acnes, among other causes.

It is characterized by its keratolytic, astringent, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is also known by its function of balancing the sebum production of the sebaceous gland and the neutralization of propionibacterium acnes, responsible for acne infection.Salycilic acid has an important comedolytic, astringent and antimicrobial effect. When applied in high concentration it produces a frost or white epidermolysis on comedones and acneiform eruptions that allows the acid to penetrate from the follicular epithelium to the sebaceous gland. It is used with great effectiveness in acne, oily skin and seborrhea. Acne blemishes can be safely removed as it prevents bacterial spread by manipulating them.

Mandelic acid has a bigger molecular structure than other AHAs so it penetrates more slowly into the stratum corneum and requires a longer exposure time. For this reason it does not cause irritation or pruritus on the skin. Further it increases collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans synthesis in the papillary dermis. It also posseses an antimicrobial action.
